 R171 selling well
According to this month's Mercedes Enthusiast magazine, the R171 is "the world leader in the compact roadster market with an average share of 30%". I think this figure must come from Mercedes publicity department so I'm sure they are selective about what they are considering to be the market. Presumably they are talking about the premium end so it is the Z4, Boxster, Audi TT etc that they are comparing it against.
It also says that despite being on sale since only March 2004, 148,000 have been sold already compared to 311,000 R170s throughout the entire seven year production life, so it's easily on target to exceed that by the time the R172 comes along. The figure of 148,000 must already be out of date because the magazine probably got that data two months ago, so it's probably half way there already in just two and a half years. |
